CORONA DISCHARGE DETECTION
Applications
- Overhead lines
- Transformers
- HT switch yards
Requirements
Requirements are industry specific and we will advise you what we need to be of service to you when we schedule your survey.
Timeline
Survey intervals are dependent on the condition and maintenance of the components.
Reporting
Upon completion, we furnish the client with a comprehensive report of our observations and our risk mitigating recommendations.
Corona discharge is one of the most common faults encountered on high voltage equipment. It causes substantial power losses and presents a hazard to nearby personnel and equipment. You might have experienced this as the hissing sound you hear when in close proximity to certain high tension overhead power lines. The sound is caused by the ionization of air surrounding an energised conductor. The energy that is radiated during the corona discharge is visible in the ultra-violet spectrum and therefore invisible to the human eye.
There are a number of factors causing corona discharge, such as atmospheric conditions, incorrect conductor sizes, line voltage spikes and spacing between the conductors.
Using an ultraviolet scanner, our technicians can pinpoint the exact location of the discharge and determine the cause, thereby enabling preventative maintenance before the discharge progresses to an electrical breakdown or causes an arc to nearby objects or personnel.
Ultra-violet scans should form part of any general maintenance regime in high tension yards and facilities. Unexpected power outages could cause severe equipment failure down the line, in addition to production losses and business interruption.
Please contact our offices for an obligation-free quotation. You can’t afford not to.
